About Plaza Mayor
Plaza Mayor is the historic heart of Madrid. Inaugurated in 1620 under Felipe III (whose equestrian statue presides over the center), it has hosted royal proclamations, Inquisition trials, bullfights and, today, Spain's most famous Christmas market. Under its 237 balconies and 9 gates live historic cafés, cocido restaurants, philatelic shops and the gateway to Habsburg Madrid.
Why we recommend it
- Historic heart of Madrid since 1620 — universal meeting point
- Cocido and calamari sandwich at its arcades
- Natural starting point to Mercado de San Miguel, Plaza de la Villa and Almudena
